The Ones Who Knock – Phillies 3, Marlins 1

5.5 games back for the second Wild Card spot. Say it with me now. 5.5 games back (at the time of this writing FIVE GAMES BACK NOW AW YISS). Just as recently as a month ago, it seemed inconceivable, but suddenly the Phillies are right back in the swing, looking more and more like the teams of old.

Domonic Brown smashed a two-run homer in the fifth inning tonight, and it would turn out to be all the offense the Phils would end up needing. Kyle Kendrick and a STELLAR bullpen held the Marlins to just one run and three hits over nine innings. Two months ago, something horrible would have inevitably wound up happening to wreck our chances to win as the game went on. But now, the Phillies have suddenly gained the ability to kick ass for a whole game instead of just the first six innings. Let’s just hope they continue kicking ass. I realize it’s next to statistically impossible for the team this late in the season to smash down the door to contention, but hey, if any team can do it, it’s this one.

Jesus, I can only imagine how this season would’ve shaken out without the injuries and the June swoon. For want of a nail, I suppose…
