8/13/12 Phillies Game Thread

After a dramatic series victory over the Cardinals was capped off by the tag team of Jimmy Rollins and Juan Pierre, the Phillies embark on a road trip to Marlins Park, home of the Center Field Abomination and…the Miami Marlins. As division rivals, the Marlins have more or less collapsed in on themselves as the season has gone on, and are now a half-game back on the Phillies for sole possession of last place in the NL East. Let’s make sure they stay there. Cash-based lifeform Cole Hamels (12-6) goes up against Nathan Eovaldi (3-7), who gave up three runs in five innings in his last start against the Phillies, resulting in a Marlins loss.

As I’ve reiterated on this blog before, the Phillies are not out of the fight until they are mathematically eliminated from the second Wild Card spot. Just remember 2007: 7 games out with 17 left to play. Or, for a more modern example, the Cardinals were 8.5 games back in the NL Wild Card race on September 1, 2011, and look where they ended up. We’re 14.5 out, but series wins against the Marlins and the Brewers will put us that much closer to clawing out of the pits, Bruce Wayne style.

I’m just saying, crazier things have happened. Discuss…

Player of the Game Prediction: Cole Hamels

  2. I’m really digging Brown in the five-spot.

Schierholtz went to the DL today, so the outfield will probably consist of Pierre, Mayberry, and Brown for the foreseeable future.

  3. Wish I could have listened tonight but I forgot to bring the iPad to MOA. Oh well, Whole Camels da bes.
